Content marketing teaches us to talk to our readers with confidence and authority, and this can come naturally as result of a firm knowledge of the niche we write in. But when you write with confidence there’s always the risk of sounding more like a know-it-all, and this is likely to deter readers from your blog than invite them in.
No blogger wants to lose readers once they’re finally right where she wants them to be. So here are few suggestions that may help you be a confident blogger and still remain humble:
Leave space for different opinions as well. Don’t write like what you know or have experienced is the only true and right way, but recognize that other people may have different things to say on those same topics.
For example, when I wrote about my yoga practice and how it helps keeping me motivated during hard times with blogging, I was only sharing my experiences, what works best for me. I didn’t state that those are the only proper ways to follow and keep a routine, – some people can’t work under week plans and time-frames; the pressure of deadlines makes them more efficient.
Unless it’s a topic you’re truly passionate about, (but even then) leave room in your writing for other opinions and experiences different than those you have.
Ask questions. Show your readers that you care about their opinion on the subject you cover. Maybe they can share different experiences, maybe something else works better for them… Ask them what they think and get their valuable advices.
Be yourself. Instead of bossing around and preaching how things should be, speak with your own voice, let it “shine” through your writing, be who you really are. People can and will recognize that, and appreciate what you’re trying to convey. In fact, since you’re here, reading about blogging on the Blogger Babes, the chances are that you’re not some stuck up and know-it-all kind of person, but someone who’s willing to learn and improve. Let your readers see and trust that.
Talk TO your readers. You first need to get to know them of course. But once you know who they are or why they’re on your pages, your blog readers can be your greatest inspiration. Think about them while you’re creating content. What is it that you want them to understand or learn after they finish reading your post? How do you want them to feel? This will make your writing more personal, conversational, natural, and the content closer to your target audience.
Never “write down” to your readers. No one wants to feel like a dummy for trying to learn something she or he doesn’t know, no matter how simple and basic that seems to you. Don’t write like you’re a class above, as you’re trying to teach someone below you. Be real and honest about your journey, admit your mistakes. Share what DOES work, for you at least. You should be learning and growing together.
It can be scary to open up to other people’s judgment like this, but if you’re kind, courteous, and have a story to share, that will shine through your writing. And even if you get an ugly comment from time to time, you shouldn’t let it discourage you. There are many left who don’t share that opinion. Let their support guide you.
