The single most important thing you can do to create a brilliant blog is to create the best content possible. Fresh and unique content means your content is:
- useful, and/or
- entertaining
Writing Useful Content
Useful content is content that is relevant to your target reader. A gossip blogger talking about Princess Kate’s row with the Queen about the naming of her second child is relevant. A post from a beauty blogger with a chemistry background explaining why expensive creams are a waste of money is relevant. A post about the difference between Edwardian and Victorian wedding invitation protocol for a posh all-things-wedding-obsessed blogger is relevant.
It’s a lot easier to try to be useful (and therefore relevant) to your reader than it is to be witty or funny. Wit takes some time to master, but being useful is a skill you can develop quickly by just asking yourself, “What content can I write knowledgeably about that is useful to my readers?”

Writing entertaining content being more difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible! Some people are clever enough that they can write about paint drying and have people crack up about it. These writers are commonly described as funny, witty, clever, original, genius, quick-witted… and often controversial or scandalous.
Being entertaining is a skill that can be developed, but it takes time. If it’s something you’re set on, start studying bloggers and writers who already have the skills you’re after. Read on and on and then practice the art of better writing by… well, practicing your writing!
