Attract More Readers By Writing to Your Ideal One

All four of our eguides have successfully launched and are available at our Learning Library, but we’re not about to stop there. If you haven’t had the chance to page through them yet or even if you’ve zoomed through already, for the next few weeks, I’ll be posting previews with some of our favorite tips alongside our usual posts.

The title of our first eguide, 50 Things Your Blog Needs to Attract More Readers, takes two things as givens:

1. That you have a blog, and
2. That you have (or want) readers.

Before you can begin to attract those readers, you need to figure out who they’ll be.

So ask yourself: Who is your reader?

When someone visits your blog, is it obvious you’re talking to her? Your target readers are the people who your products and services are designed to help. They’re the people whose problems you solve or whose sense of humor you cater to, so you should get a feel for who they are.

If you’re unsure who your target reader is, it’s time to do some soul-searching and research.

Ask yourself questions like these:

• What are your strongest skills and passions?
• What do you not like to talk about?
• Are your readers exactly like you? Or are you writing from the point-of-view of a mentor or someone who’s been there, done that?

Create your ideal reader and then flesh her out: what does she do for a living? Where does she shop? What does she like to do? What are her hopes and dreams? Give her a name and identity. Then craft your blog topics to appeal to that reader.

For example, Blogger Babes’s ideal reader is that smart and sophisticated female blogger who’s most interested in lifestyle topics such as fashion, beauty, and travel. She views her blog as an extension of her personal tastes and life choices, and she is interested and invested in making her blog a success by designing, writing, curating, and marketing her blog to appeal to her target readers and sponsors.

Now look around our site and notice how our ideal reader is reflected in our layout and our posts. Once you know who you’re writing to, the writing gets easier and more fun.
